Yarra Bend Park

Location: Kew
Time from CBD:
25 mins
Type of fish: Murray cod, redfin, Macquarie perch, carp

You’ll find great fishing experiences around the bend. Yarra Bend Park is the largest area of natural vegetation near the Melbourne CBD area with over 16km of riverfront bushland. In this area, you’ll get more than just get a great fishing ground

There’s a BBQ area where you and your family can enjoy cooking and eating your catch for the day. It’s also a great place to get away from the noise and commotion of the city, without having to venture too far.

Altona Pier

Location: Altona
Time from CBD:
45 mins
Type of fish: Flathead, pinkies, snapper

In recent years, Altona Pier has jumped into the limelight for the fact that it is home to some rare Pokemon.

However, back in the real world, the recent addition of the artificial reef about 50m from the end of the pier makes this a great location for catching actual fish too. It’s also close to a natural reef and rocks that provide fishers with a huge number of snapper during the warmer months.

You’re likely to seize the largest number of fish when there’s a tide change. Pinkies are caught when there’s a huge tide coming in while flatheads are caught when the tide’s low.

Yarra River

Were someone to hypothetically cruise Melbourne and ask random people, “What’s the best fishing spot near me?”, then he or she would hear about Yarra River in no time at all. An Australian icon if there ever was one, the epic waterway ultimately stretches for over 250 km. Along the way, you’ll find boat cruises, parks, nightlife, events, a casino, and yes, some seriously good fishing spots.

If you need someplace specific to start your journey, check out Warrandyte State Park, Punt Road Bridge, or Yarra Bend Park, through which this river runs. You’ll be glad you did.

Type of fishing: Bank or river
Expect to find: Bream, Estuary Perch, Mullet, Mulloway, Redfin, Carp, Murray Cod, and more.
Rules or hazards: Only 2 fishing lines are permitted, catch & release is encouraged, and certain restrictions or prohibitions may apply when fishing from specific areas.

Gem Pier Fishing Overview

I’d look at fishing on weekdays, evenings or early mornings to avoid crowds in warmer weather. During weekends and on public holidays, Gem Pier is really too busy for my taste.

A lot of Pinkies, Flathead and Bream get reported as caught from the pier at times. Often on pilchards and prawns.

But I’ve seen some effective use of soft plastics for Flathead, too.

Some fisho’s claiming it tends to get more bites than when fishing Altona Pier. But in my own experience, this hasn’t been the case.

I tend to find it a bit busy quite often. There’s a lot of shipping traffic, at times the navy births here.

In terms of bait. The most common bay baits seem to work well. Pippis, squid, pilchards, whitebait, sandworms, chicken and of course prawns.

I’d recommend keeping the hook size down and the lines lightweight. Some of the smaller flathead and whiting rigs sold commercially would be a good fit.
