How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Boat in Melbourne? 2026 Price Guide

How much does it cost to hire a boat in Melbourne? At Boat4Hire, Polycraft Joy starts from AUD 90 per hour, while Polycraft Mary and Speedy are AUD 120 per hour. For a group outing on the Yarra River, The Spaceship is AUD 199 for two hours, with fuel included. The right choice depends on your group size, hire duration and planned route.

This 2026 price guide compares our boats, passenger capacities and hire options so you can plan your day without relying on generic Melbourne rental averages. Our Docklands location is 84 New Quay Promenade, Docklands VIC 3008. Check the booking page for availability and the final price for your selected boat and date, or call 0423 593 810 for help choosing.

Understanding Melbourne Boat Hire Pricing in 2026

When comparing boat hire prices in Melbourne, first check whether the advertised amount is per boat, per person, per hour or for a package. Boat4Hire’s Polycraft Joy rate is AUD 90 per boat per hour. Mary and Speedy are AUD 120 per boat per hour. The Spaceship’s AUD 199 rate is for a two-hour hire, not AUD 199 per hour. These are Boat4Hire prices, not averages for other operators.

The video below looks at mega-yacht rental costs in a different market. It is background viewing only, not a Boat4Hire price list or a quote for a Melbourne charter. Use the fleet prices in this guide and our booking page when planning your hire:

Polycraft Joy: up to 5 guests, AUD 90 per hour. Polycraft Mary: up to 8 guests, AUD 120 per hour. Speedy: up to 10 guests, AUD 120 per hour. The Spaceship: up to 12 guests, AUD 199 for two hours, fuel included. The minimum hire is one hour; the advertised Spaceship package is two hours. For larger celebrations, our skippered yacht option accommodates up to 24 guests and is quoted for your event.

Yarra River vs. Port Phillip Bay: Cost Differences

A Yarra River boat hire is a different outing from a fishing trip on Port Phillip Bay. Choose a boat and route that suit your group, experience and the conditions. Check the operating area, licence requirements and fuel arrangements for the specific vessel before booking. A price for one boat or route should not be treated as a quote for every trip.

Peak vs. Off-Peak: When to Save Money

Check availability for your preferred date before making plans. A weekday, weekend, public holiday or special event may have different availability or booking conditions, but this guide does not promise a discount or apply an assumed surcharge. The Boat4Hire booking page gives the price for the option you select. For a yacht charter, request a quote that identifies the boat, date, duration and inclusions.

Self-Drive Boat Hire: The Most Affordable Way to Captain

Self-drive hire lets your group enjoy the waterways without booking a private skipper for the trip. The Spaceship is a no-boat-licence self-drive option for up to 12 guests. Do not assume the same licence conditions apply to every Polycraft or Speedy hire: confirm the requirements for your chosen boat and route with Boat4Hire. A safety briefing helps you understand the controls and the permitted operating area before departure.

For a simple price comparison, one hour on Polycraft Joy is AUD 90 for the boat, or AUD 18 each when five guests share the cost. One hour on Polycraft Mary is AUD 120, or AUD 15 each for eight guests. One hour on Speedy is AUD 120, or AUD 12 each for ten guests. These examples divide the listed boat rate by the stated passenger capacity; your group’s cost per person changes if fewer people join.

For a relaxed group cruise, The Spaceship costs AUD 199 for two hours and carries up to 12 guests. With 12 people sharing the boat price, that is approximately AUD 16.58 each for the two-hour hire. Fuel is included in this package. Choose this option for a self-drive BBQ boat outing, and confirm any extra time or additional requests when you book.

Small Group Cruising (1-6 People)

For a couple, family or small group, Polycraft Joy accommodates up to five guests at AUD 90 per hour. If your group needs more seats, Polycraft Mary accommodates up to eight guests at AUD 120 per hour. Compare passenger capacity, the planned route and the relevant hire conditions before choosing. Our self-drive boat hire Melbourne page provides more information, and our team can help you select the right option.

Medium Group Adventures (7-12 People)

For seven to twelve guests, compare Mary, Speedy and The Spaceship rather than assuming they have the same seating or price. Mary takes up to eight guests, Speedy up to ten and The Spaceship up to twelve. Check official Victorian boating safety guidance and follow the briefing for your hire. You can check our booking calendar for your preferred option.

Skippered Yachts and Party Boat Hire Costs

For groups larger than the self-drive boat capacities, ask about a skippered charter. Boat4Hire’s yacht option accommodates up to 24 guests. Unlike the hourly Polycraft rates or the two-hour Spaceship package, yacht charter pricing is quote on request. Tell us your guest count, date, duration and plans so we can confirm a suitable vessel and the total quoted price.

A skippered charter should be compared using its complete quote, not an assumed daily skipper fee. Ask what is included in the charter price and whether any requested extras are charged separately. For broader boating-industry information, see Victoria’s boating industry association; your Boat4Hire charter quote remains the source for your event’s cost.

A private boat event gives your group a different setting from a city venue. To compare the costs fairly, use the boat hire or charter price, the number of guests and any food, drink or other event arrangements you choose. BYO can help you plan the budget, but check what is allowed on your selected vessel. Compare the complete event budget to find the option that suits your group.

Party Boat Hire for Bucks and Hens Nights

For a birthday, bucks or hens celebration, start with your guest count and preferred date. Groups of up to twelve can consider The Spaceship, while larger groups can enquire about a skippered yacht for up to twenty-four guests. Our party boat hire Melbourne page explains the options. Before booking, confirm which of these facilities your chosen boat provides:

• Sound system and music arrangements
• Storage for your BYO food and drinks
• BBQ facilities on the selected vessel
• Space and seating for your confirmed guest count

Luxury Yacht Charters for Corporate Events

For a corporate outing or private celebration, our skippered yacht charter is quoted for the event. Provide your preferred date, guest count, duration and any catering or itinerary requests. Compare the final quote and its inclusions to understand the cost of your planned event. Our team can explain the available options before you commit to a booking.

Avoiding Hidden Fees: Bonds, Fuel, and Extras

When calculating how much it costs to hire a boat in Melbourne, separate the boat hire price from the security bond and any optional extras. Check the duration, fuel arrangements, return time and applicable conditions for the vessel you choose. The figures in this guide describe our fleet options; they are not a substitute for the terms shown with your booking.

The confirmed security bond is AUD 500. Budget for this separately from the boat hire price and check how it is collected and returned under your booking conditions. Ask our team if you need clarification before your hire.

Fuel is included in The Spaceship’s AUD 199 two-hour package. For another vessel, a longer hire or a charter, confirm the fuel arrangements in the booking details or quote. Return the boat at the agreed time and check the booking terms for any charges that could apply to a late return.

Keep the boat tidy, take your rubbish with you and follow the return instructions provided for your hire. Check the applicable booking conditions for cleaning, damage or late-return charges. Ask our team about any conditions you need clarified before departure.

The ‘BYO’ Savings Strategy

BYO food and drinks can make a group outing easier to budget for. Decide what your group wants to bring and confirm the arrangements for your chosen boat, including any BBQ facilities or storage. Compare your own food and drink budget with any catering quote rather than relying on a promised saving per person. Bring what you need for the day and follow the onboard instructions.

Insurance and Safety Inclusions

Before booking, ask about the safety briefing, equipment, passenger requirements and insurance terms that apply to the selected vessel. Do not assume every boat hire has the same inclusions or cover. Our team can explain the arrangements for your trip. Check availability and booking details, or call 0423 593 810 if you have questions before choosing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to hire a boat in Melbourne?

The Spaceship is a no-boat-licence self-drive option. Licence requirements for Polycraft Joy, Polycraft Mary and Speedy should be confirmed for the boat and route you choose. Contact Boat4Hire before booking if you are unsure; do not assume that every self-drive vessel has identical requirements.

Is fuel included in the boat hire price?

Fuel is included in The Spaceship’s AUD 199 two-hour hire package. For another boat, a longer hire or a yacht charter, check the booking details or ask our team to confirm the fuel arrangements.

How much is the security bond for a self-drive boat?

The confirmed security bond is AUD 500. Check the applicable booking conditions for how the bond is collected and returned. It is separate from the advertised boat hire price, so include it when planning what you need for your booking.

Can I bring my own food and drinks (BYO) to save money?

BYO food and drinks are an option for your boat outing. Confirm what is permitted on your selected vessel and which facilities are available. Your food and drink budget depends on what your group chooses to bring or arrange; this guide does not promise a fixed catering saving.

What happens if it rains on the day of my boat hire?

Check the weather-related conditions for your booking and contact Boat4Hire if the forecast concerns you. Our team can explain how conditions affect your planned hire and the options available under your booking terms. Check those terms before confirming your hire.

Are there any hidden cleaning fees I should know about?

Check the cleaning, damage and late-return conditions for the boat you book. Take your rubbish with you and follow the return instructions. Contact our team before booking if you need clarification about any applicable charges.

How many people can I fit on a self-drive boat to split the cost?

Polycraft Joy takes up to five guests, Polycraft Mary up to eight, Speedy up to ten and The Spaceship up to twelve. Yacht charters accommodate up to twenty-four guests. A full group of twelve sharing The Spaceship’s AUD 199 two-hour boat price pays approximately AUD 16.58 each, before any separately agreed extras.

Is it cheaper to hire a boat on a weekday?

Check the booking page for the price and availability on your selected date. This guide does not promise a weekday discount or assume a weekend surcharge. If your dates are flexible, compare the available options or ask our team for help. Yacht charter prices are provided by quote.
